Over the past six weeks we have been focusing on the theme of HOPE, a topic rather appropriate considering our circumstances.  When the series was first proposed, back in March, we had set this coming Sunday, May 31, 2020 as a celebration Sunday.  We anticipated that we would all be back in church by then and we could celebrate our realization of HOPE all together. In retrospect, one could argue that we were a little overly optimistic, but in fairness at the time things didn’t look as serious as they became.  Now six weeks after the series started we in Brampton are living in aRead More →

HOPE – May 25-2020: Its Enemies If you have been following this series of devotionals, or at least reading the first paragraph, you know that we have been working through an acrostic based on the word HOPE. H – Honest, O – Opportunity, P – Prayer, E – Expectation This week I want to write about the enemies of HOPE, based on the acrostic. Honest – It would be easy to say that the enemies of honesty are lies, or more politely dishonesty, but I would argue that honesty’s enemy is fantasy.   But, not science fiction or Hobbit type fantasy.  I mean the fantasy thatRead More →

HOPE – May 17-2020: E is for Expectation We are entering the fifth week of the HOPE series from North Bramalea United Church.  I recommend looking up the messages by Jamie and Katrina that have been streamed these past four weeks (www.nbuc.ca).  They have broken down the word HOPE into an acrostic: H – Honest O – Opportunity P – Prayer E – Expectation These past three weeks I wrote about H for Honest, O for Opportunity and P for Prayer.  This week I want to write about E for Expectation. Christmas was always a bit of a mixed bag for me.  I grew upRead More →

We are entering the third week of the HOPE series from North Bramalea United Church. I recommend looking up the messages by Jamie and Katrina that were streamed by NBUC on April 19 and 26 (www.nbuc.ca). They have broken down the word HOPE into an acrostic: H – Honest O – Opportunity P – Prayer E – Expectation   The first week they talked about the first two letters: H & O and this past week they covered P & E. For four devotionals I am focusing on each of these letters. Last week was H for Honest and this week O for Opportunity.  Read More →

We are entering the second week of the HOPE series from North Bramalea United Church.  I recommend looking up the message by Jamie and Katrina that was streamed by NBUC last Sunday (www.nbuc.ca).  They have broken down the word HOPE into an acrostic: H – Honest O – Opportunity P – Prayer E- Expectation Last week they talked about the first two letters: H & O and this week they will cover P & E. For the next four devotionals I would like to focus on each of these letters.  So, this week is H – Honest. We humans can be pretty good at lyingRead More →

Its been awhile since I did a live stream on Facebook.  That’s partly because I don’t know what to say.  Well, that’s not entirely true.  It’s just that I am trying to present some hope and positive words on my live streams and to be quite frank I’m over it.  The virus can go away now. I would really like to get on with my life as it was. It has been labelled as a novel corona virus.  The word novel meaning new or unique.  Well the novability, novillity, novelitity, whatever, the newness has worn off!  We had a staff vote last week at ourRead More →

We are starting a new series this coming Sunday based around Hope, something that for many people is in short supply.  The working title for this Sunday is, “Hope Is Contagious.”  I don’t know if the person who titled this message was really clever, or just didn’t catch the connection with the virus.  But, let me ask this question, is hope contagious? The thing about something that is contagious, is that you don’t really have to do a lot to catch it.  In fact, the hardest work is to avoid catching it.  I think the challenge with hope is that it requires some work inRead More →

I’ve started telling people that, when this is all over, we are going to hold a big party at The Journey.  We are going to roll out the BBQs, set out huge slabs of cake and gorge on gallons of ice-cream.  We are also going to bend our rules concerning children and give out hugs! There is nothing like a good party.  That is one of the things I have missed at The Journey.  We normally have a party for our Placement Students at the end of their semester, but we didn’t even get a chance to say a proper goodbye.  We normally have aRead More →

I grew up going to church –  a lot.  Not just Sundays, and Christmas and Easter, but also all the other church calendar events – Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Shrove Tuesday (one of my favourites – Pancake Day), and of course Good Friday.  There was a part of me that wished I was Roman Catholic, because they also have all these great feast days to attend.  There is nothing like a church potluck dinner. Anyway, my church going probably seems a little excessive to some, but this was my community, these were my friends and this was the centre of practicing my faith in Christ.Read More →

Let me start with a simple question – Do you want the Good News or Bad News First? I have been asked and have asked that question many times.  Usually the two pieces of news are related.  For example – dinner is done; however, I burnt it – good news and bad news.  BTW:  that is a real life example, repeated multiple times! Some people want the bad news first.  They want to get it over with.  They think that hearing the good news second will help to overcome the bad news.  Others want the good news first.  They would like to start off happyRead More →
