24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” – Matthew 7:24-27
I worked at a children’s camp for a few summers when I was in my early 20s. One year a group of us went up a couple of months early to do some construction work. One of our projects was to build a double cabin for the campers with a full size basement that would be the craft room. We had a contractor with us to guide our work and make sure that we constructed things well and didn’t damage ourselves.
The foundation for the building was cement blocks. So, we mixed cement and laid the blocks. When the foundation was completed a building inspector came to approve the first stage of our work. Unfortunately, the mix for the cement had too much sand and not enough cement. So, the building inspector gave us two choices – tear the whole thing down, or divide what was supposed to be our large craft room into two with another wall, that was laid with the right mix for the cement. The building was constructed on a slope and I remember standing at the top of the hill and kicking the newly laid blocks and some of them tumbling down. The contractor was not pleased. We opted for the extra wall, rather than starting all over. This meant our craft room was divided in two and not particularly useful.
Whether it is too much sand in your cement, or too much sand under your foundation, what you build your life on will affect how you live your life.
So, what is your foundation built on? Are you in danger of crumbling down?
Come out this Sunday to The Sunday Gathering and lay down a strong spiritual foundation!
